5

x + y = 5  \\  \\ x  = 5 - y\:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  \:  -  - (1)

Given, x - y = 8

=> 5 - y - y =8

=> - 2y = 3

=> y = - 3 / 2

Putting value of y in ( x + y = 5 )

=> x + y = 5

=> x - 3 / 2 = 5

=> x = 5 + 3 / 2

=> x = ( 10 + 3 ) / 2

=> x = 13 / 2 or 6.5

Hey friend...!! here's your answer
_________________________

x + y = 5 - - - - - - 1 \\ \\ x - y = 8 - - - - - - 2 \\ \\ solving \: equation \: 1 \: and \: 2 \\ \\ from \: eq. \: 1 \\ \\ x = 5 - y - - - - - - 3 \\ \\ put \: the \: value \: of \: equation \: 3 \: in \: 1 \\ \\ (5 - y) - y = 8 \\ \\ - 2y = 8 - 5 \\ \\ y = - \frac{3}{2} \\ \\ put \: the \: value \: of \: y \: in \: eq \: 3 \\ \\ x = 5 -(- \frac{3}{2} )\\ \\ x = \frac{10 + 3}{2} \\ \\ x = \frac{13}{2} \\ \\ \\ so \: the \: value \: of \: x \: = \frac{13}{2} \: and \: the \: value \: of \: y = - \frac{3}{2}
