Step-by-step explanation:

x+y = 83 --------(1)

4x+y = 182 ---------(2)

multiply eq (1) with 4

now eq (1) is 4x + 4y =332

subtracting eq (2) from eq(1)

i.e,

4x+4y = 332

4x + y = 182

so that x gets cancelled and then

3y = 150

y = 50

substitution of y value in any of these equations gives x

value also

4x + 50 = 182

4x = 132

x = 33

Given :   X + Y = 83 and 4 x + Y = 182

To find : value of x & y by elimination method

Solution:

x + y   = 83      Eq1

4x  + y  = 182     Eq 2

Eq2 - Eq1  will eliminate y

=> 4x - x  = 182 - 83

=> 3x  = 99

Dividing both sides by 3

=> x  = 33

4 * eq1  - Eq2  will eliminate x

=> 4y - y  =  332 - 182

=> 3y  = 150

=> y  50

x  = 33  & y = 50
