Concept:

The elimination method is the method in which one variable is eliminated to get the value of another variable.

Given:

2x + y = 5

And,

3x + 2y = 8

Find:

We are asked to solve the given system of equations using the elimination method.

Solution:

We have,

2x + y = 5     .....(i)

And,

3x + 2y = 8     .....(ii)

Now,

According to elimination method,

First,

Multiply equation (i) by 3 and equation (ii) by 2,

We get,

6x + 3y = 15     .....(iii)

And,

6x + 4y = 16     .....(iv)

Now,

Adding equation (iii) and (iv),

i.e.

6x + 3y = 15

6x + 4y = 16

We get,

-y = -1

i.e.

y =1,

NOw

Putting the value of y in equation (i),

2x + y = 5

2x + 1 = 5

2x = 4

We get,

x = 2

Hence, we can say that the solution to the given equation is x = 2 and y = 1.
