Solve linear equations

Given: 4x - 3y = 16, 6x + 5y = 62

To find: the solution

Solution:

The given equations are

4x - 3y = 16 .....(1)

6x + 5y = 62 .....(2)

We use elimination method to find the required solution.

We multiply (1) no. equation by 6 and (2) no. equation by 4; we get

24x - 18y = 96

24x + 20y = 248

On subtraction, we get

24x - 18y - 24x - 20y = 96 - 248

or, - 38y = - 152

or, y = 4

Put y = 4 in (1) no. equation; we get

4x - 3 × 4 = 16

or, 4x - 12 = 16

or, 4x = 16 + 12

or, 4x = 28

or, x = 7

Thus the required solution is x = 7, y = 4.

NOTE:

This problem can be solved using SUBSTITUTION METHOD where we take the value of x in terms of y from one equation and substitute in the other. You find the value of y. Then put the value of y in any of the two equations and find x.
