Pi-Bond:-

The covalent chemical bond which is formed by lateral overlapping of half-filled p-orbitals of atoms is known as π-bond.

Characteristic features of π-Bond:-

✦In general,Pi Bonds are weaker than sigma bonds as the overlapping takes place at the side of two lobes of p-orbital and hence the extent of overlapping is less than that of a sigma bond.

✦During the formation of π bonds, the axes of the atomic orbitals are parallel to each other whereas the overlapping is perpendicular to the internuclear axis.

✦All the atoms of molecules with pi bond lie in the same plane .

✦The electron density is concentrated in the region perpendicular to the bond axis.

✦The overlapping orbitals are always pure orbitals.i.e, unhybridized orbitals.

✦Double bonds consist of one sigma and one pi bond, whereas a typical triple bond is made up of two π bonds and one σ bond.

✦Atoms with pi bond are less reactive.

✦It restricts free rotation of orbitals.

✦There is no symmetry .

✦It does'nt determine the shape of molecule.

✦Pi bonds are found in alkenes and alkynes.
