Some dams are referred to as a multipurpose projects because it provide many benefits simultaneously at the same time. Some of the purpose is served by multipurpose projects are as follows:

1.They help in generating hydroelectricity.

2. The help in controlling floods.

3. They provide water for irrigation.

4. Multipurpose projects are used for Inland navigation and fish breeding.

The two multipurpose projects of India which help in integrated development are Bhakra Nangal Dam for water power and irrigation & Hirakud project for storage of water and flood control.
