Due to the presence of chlorophyll.. they have the pigment and due to photosynthesis they synthesize their own food with aid from air and moisture..

in case of plants having red or brown colour there is chlorophyll present but there are other chromoplasts which have a dominating effect on the colour of green pigment of chlorophyll in that case becomes dominating and the colour of these changes to red but they can perform photosynthesis without any obstruction
