Some materials produce flame on burning while some not .why?

hii..
the combustible substance like wax which vaporize on burning produces flame.... and those combustible substances which don't get vaporized on burning do not produces flame..
for e.g.. charcoal
so it depends upon whether the substance will vapors on burning or not........
