Let us answer it

Explanation:

Metals

They are those elements that have tendency to loose electrons .

"They are quite reactive and react readily with many substances like water , oxygen , acids etc "

Reaction of metal with oxygen

When metal reacts with oxygen they form metal oxides that is :

M + O₂--->MO,MO₂,M₂O₃,M₂O....(depending upon valency of metal involved )

Let us take examples of few metals such as   Al and Mg :

Mg + O₂--> MgO

                (Magnesium oxide )

Al + O₂--> Al₂O₃

            (aluminium oxide )

Nature of metal oxides

The nature of metal oxides is generally basic that they turn red litmus blue .

But some metal oxides are amphoteric that is they have acidic as well as basic character such as aluminium oxide and zinc oxide .

  • Let us prove it by writing equation involved :

Al₂O₃ +6 HCl--> 2AlCl₃ + 3H₂O

                      (aluminium chloride )

Al₂O₃ + 2NaOH-->2 NaAlO₂ + H₂O

                      (sodium aluminate )

Similar reactions are shown by Zinc oxide .
