The old and ancient temple of Kedarnath has many interesting stories surrounding it. Evidence has been found that this temple had been built in the Mahabharata period. History says that the Pandavas Yudhistir, Bheem, Arjun, Nakul, Sahadev) came to perform penance and ask for forgiveness from Lord Shiva as they considered themselves of being guilty of the cardinal sin of Bhrata- Hatya (killing one’s own brothers the Kauravas). Lord Shiva as present disguised as a bull when Pandavas were offering penance and he was very pleased with their purity of spirit. When Bheem the strongest and the fiercest of the Pandava brothers recognized Lord Shiva and tried to approach him it is said that even Shiva was apprehensive about the arrival of the huge Bheem. Not wanting to confront him Shiva disguised as a bull ran away and left his hind part behind in haste.
