Some organisms suspend their metabolic activities to survive in unfavourable condition. Explain with the help of any four examples.
Answers
There are many types of organisms and they have different types of responses to the abiotic factors. They are as follows:
1. Regulate
2. Conform
3. Migrate
4. Suspend.
In regulation, the organisms are able to maintain their body temperature, osmotic concentration and these organisms are specially Aves and Mammals.
In conform, the organism is not able to maintain their body temperature and their osmotic concentration. These are mostly Animals in aquatic and polar regions and nearly all the plants.
In migrate, the organism moves temporarily from the native place in order to survive as they can't change or regulate their internal temperature. The example can be of Siberian cranes, which come to India's Keolado's National Park(Rajasthan).
In Suspend(which you actually asked for : P), mostly in bacteria, fungi and lower plants, various kinds of thick wall spores can be found, which help them to survive in the unfavourable conditions and these spores burst when the outer environment is favourable or suitable for the seed to germinate. In plants, the state is called as DORMANCY.
In Animals, those who are unable to migrate from a place which is colder to a place which is hotter, then they go under the suspension of their metabolic activities. This is done by going under a full phase of eating and then a deep sleep. This type of suspension can be seen in Bears and this is known as Hibernation. In aquatic animals, the process is known as Aestivation. In many Zooplanktons, the stage is known as Diapause.
