How does someone keep mentally healthy?

What things can you do that will be the most beneficial for your brain? The simplest answer would be to treat your brain as though it was part of the whole “you” - which it is - and to live a full, diverse, somewhat challenging and active, healthy life (whilst avoiding the extremes).

After all, your brain doesn’t live in splendid isolation from your body, rather it offers powerful and adaptive enabling and enhancing command and control functions for “you” in your life.

So if you live your life how you want, in context with your wants and needs, your brain will take a worthwhile part in the integrated “whole” that is your life and adapt as needed.

I guess the keywords here are “full”, “diverse”, “challenging”, “active” and “healthy”. It’s subjective and individual what that all means to you, but to me it says to “do many things”, both physical and mental, and to look after the whole “you” by getting adequate sleep, exercising at least moderately and avoiding unhealthy food and risky behaviours that may negatively impact brain function (such as excessive repetitive head impact and any unnecessary chemical experimentation).

As I said, it’s subjective and individual, although some things, like moderate exercise, good sleep and a healthy, balanced diet have been shown to assist in memory consolidation, thinking processes and mood. What you want from life will define the parameters, and your brain will adapt - rewire, if you will - to suit your behaviours.

Some people have a habit of making mental notes. They sit with their eyes closed and make note of what the speaker is trying to say. This is called empathic listening.

  • Empathic listening is an act of listening, understanding, and reacting empathetically to the speaker's concerns.
  • Such a listener gives all the attention to the speaker and listens carefully before responding.
  • An intellectual listener presents his views while arguing on the topic.
  • A projective listener bases his argument on personal bias and listens only partially.
  • Likewise, a pretended listener acts like he is listening without being attentive.
