Personally, I think that we have a grip on our own lives. This is because humans are extremely unpredictable people, and if things turn out bad it's probably because we made bad choices. If things turn out good, it's because we made good choices. Even if someone is trying to control other people- manipulating- they have to take into account the conscience someone has that stops them from doing certain things- the 'human' factor. This is why even if somebody is trying to control our lives, we always have a certain extent of control over ourselves.
