You can best understand it like this. Say your body is a high rise office building. The corridors are blood vessels and the offices are cells. Insulin is the key to open each door. Sugar is the people roaming the Corridors. So the people need to get into the offices to do their jobs. In a healthy person the key is in their pocket and they open the door whenever they need to get in to do their work and maintain peak productivity. but the offices are tiny and each one only holds so much. Any more people in there than one and productivity drops because they are too crowded to work. In a person with diabetes, they keys (insulin) each person tries to use dont work or there aren't enough keys. The insulin isn't there to let the sugar in. So they get artificial keys (injected insulin). Now the doors open (cell wall) and allow the people (sugar) to enter. Now productivity (cell functions) is restored. But too many people (too much sugar) actually reduces productivity. You'd think more people (more sugar) would help but it actually hinders. Cells can only process so much sugar at once. Too much sugar causes nausea, headaches and vomiting. Eventually it can lead to coma and death. Too much sugar also damages many body systems especially the kidneys, eyes, heart and peripheral circulation (hands, arms especially legs and feet). Hope this helps!
