Over thousands of generations, the shape of the seed wings becomes modified to take the best advantage of the winds prevailing at the time when the seeds are ripened and ready for dispersal. Very small seeds may have extended, almost weightless structures that enable them to be carried long distances (dandelion.) Larger, heavier seeds need correspondingly larger and more elaborate wings to enable them to fly far from their parent plant. Many of the same design elements are seen in airplanes and helicopters. These structures allow the seeds to sail along on the wind, and colonize areas that may be quite distant from the parent.
