The normal solvent - solute combination is when a solid dissolves in a solvent.
Each solute dissolves in an appropriate solvent.
For instance ionic substances dissolve in water given that water is polar.
A solute can only dissolve in a solvent which have similar property.
Again some solids do not go through the liquid state.
They change directly from solid to gas.
This process is known as sublimation.
These solids easily diffuse in air since their molecules interact with the air molecules.
