If both state of matter have suitable movement they'll diffuse if not then they will not diffuse.

The contradictory statement about diffusion as said is that some of the solids diffuse in a liquid while do not diffuse in gases whereas some of them diffuse in gases while they do not diffuse in liquid.
The reason behind this statement is the process of diffusion is totally proportional to the size of the solute and the solvent in regard to the intermolecular spaces present between them which facilitates the diffusion.
