Substances are classified as follows

Solid - Sugar, salt, ghee, book, sponge, charcoal.

Liquid - Petrol, honey, ink.

Gas - Oxygen, carbon dioxide, aroma of perfume.

  • Classification is done on the basis of general existing nature of substances.
  • Matter exists in four states namely solid, liquid, gas and plasma.
  • Solid has tightly packed structure.
  • Liquid has less tightly packed molecules.
  • Molecules of gas are spread over large area.
  • Plasma contains mixture of nuclei and electrons.
  • The fourth state i.e. plasma occurs at very high temperatures.
