SOLUTION

GIVEN

Some values for the Range of the rational function f(x) = 3x² - 5 are 22, 70, and 295.

TO DETERMINE

The Domain corresponding to each value.

EVALUATION

Here the given function is

f(x) = 3x² - 5

Now f(x) = 22

⇒ 3x² - 5 = 22

⇒ 3x² = 27

⇒ x² = 9

⇒ x = ± 9

Now f(x) = 70

⇒ 3x² - 5 = 70

⇒ 3x² = 75

⇒ x² = 25

⇒ x = ± 5

Again f(x) = 295

⇒ 3x² - 5 = 295

⇒ 3x² = 300

⇒ x² = 100

⇒ x = ± 10

Hence the required Domain

= { - 10 , - 9 , - 5 , 5 , 9 , 10 }
