Grammar is the backbone of a language and without it any single thing you know may be flux, in a sort of jelly without much consistency. In a nutshell, grammar provides you with the structure you need in order to organize and put your messages and ideas across. It is the railway through which your messages will be transported. Without it, in the same way as a train cannot move without railways, you won’t be able to convey your ideas to their full extension without a good command of the underlying grammar patterns and structures of the language.

I understand that many students ask this question simply because in their own experience they have always been presented with two main scenarios, and nothing in between. They want to know where they are going to be standing as regards to their learning.

Mother tongue is the language which a child starts hearing after being born and thus, it also helps in providing a definite shape to our emotions and thoughts. This provides an opportunity to ensure better alignment between the learning practices and outcomes valued in the curriculum, and the objectives and procedures for evaluating teachers, schools and the system as a whole. Turkey already has established processes for evaluating teachers and schools and monitoring performance and learning outcomes across the education system. This chapter suggests how these processes can be used more effectively to support improvements in teaching and assessment. The chapter recommends that teacher appraisal and school evaluation focus less on summative test results and more centrally on the progress that students make in their learning, as a more meaningful measure of instructional quality. Developing a regular national assessment will also help to ensure that when outcomes data is used to inform evaluation, including for system monitoring, the inferences are fair, reliable and reflect the curriculum’s learning goals.
