Squaring both sides
$(x- \frac{1}{x} )^{2}$=$4^{2}$
$x^{2}$+$\frac{1}{x} ^{2}$-2×$\frac{1}{x}$= 16
$x^{2}$+$\frac{1}{x}$-2 = 16               {we will cut x with 1/x}
$x^{2}$+$\frac{1}{x} = 16+2$
$x^{2}$+$\frac{1}{x}$= 18
