Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. If one of your blood vessels gets damaged, it sends out signals that are picked up by platelets. The plateletsthen rush to the site of damage and form a plug, or clot, to repair the damage.

=also called as Thrombocytes

=They are cell fragments produced from Megakaryocytes ( special cells in bone marrow )

=Blood normally contain 1,500,00-3,500,00 platelets mm-3

=Platelets can release variety of substances most of which are involved in coagulation or clotting of blood

=A reduction in their number can lead to clotting disorder which will lead to excessive loss of blood from body ( Hemophilia / Christmas disease )
