Sometime HCl is written HCl(g) and sometimes HCl(l)? Why is not proper to call HCL gas as hydrochloric acid?

According to the my thinking, HCl(g) is known as the hydrogen chloride gas and not hydrochloric acid because in the gaseous state, does not ionize to give hydrogen ions. These are related only when the gas is dissolved in water. Hydrochloric acid dissociate completely in water. Even in the absence of water hydrochloric acid converted into hydrogen chloride gas.
