Sometimes I get mixed up, I need to make sure I'm getting this right:

Is \sqrt{x-1} =-3 possible??
I don't need the answer, I just want to know if this is possible.

yes it is possible as square root of any integer can be negative too.
√10-1 =√9 = ±3

violettkdv35: Then how come 2√(5x-4 ) -3 = -11, is a no solution? As I'm solving the problem, I get the equation: √(5x-4 )= -4, when I square -4, it says the answer is 2i.
