Ether is a volatile substance and to change from the liquid state to the vapor state, it requires latent heat of vaporisation. Ether takes up this heat of vaporisation from the portion of skin it is sprayed on. The energy lost by the particles from the affected area makes the area cool and leaves it numb i.e. the patient doesn't feel much of pain.

hope u understand....!!

Ether is volatile liquid.

It absorbs heat energy from the body and evaporates rapidly such that the temperature of the area becomes so cool and the area becomes numb.

This reduces pain while performing surgery.
