Sonal kept a magnet close to an ordinary iron bar. He observed that the iron bar attracts a pin as shown in given figure below. What inference could she draw from this observation?

The bar magnet induces a magnetic field in the iron bar because the iron bar is magnetic. Even if there is no contact between the bar magnet and the iron bar, iron being highly permeable, becomes magnetic.

The iron bar in turn attracts the pin.

We ,the professionals in magnetics, say jokingly that magnetism is an infectious disease among the community of magnetic materials. Depending on the immunity ( reverse of permeability) , the infection is either severe or mild.
