• The revolt of Songram Sangma was one of the key revolts that took place in Assam in the year 1906 against the British. This revolt occurred because of the exploitation of the British that deprived the tribes of their forest rights that the tribes were used to. The tribal people who were dispersed inside the deep forests were forced by the British to move away and live in a small land where the British could control them better.
• Forests were a livelihood source for the tribal, and therefore the forest laws that was formulated by the British had a considerable effect on the tribal people’s lives. The British had pronounced all forests as state property and categorized certain forests as reserved and the tribal people were not permitted to hunt, cultivate, or collect fruits in these areas. This compelled several tribes to move to other places to seek livelihood and this led to a shortage of labourers for the British.
• Some tribal were allotted small strips of land close to the forest for cultivation and in return these tribes were made to work for the British. The 19th century witnessed several mines and tea plantations coming up in various parts of India. The tribal people were compelled to leave their land and work in plantations and mines as opposed to living peaceably in the forest.  
• By the 19th century, several moneylenders and traders began to come into the forests for buying forest produce, obtaining cheap labour, and offering loans. The tribal people were further greatly affected by these people as they were exploited by the money lenders and traders who had invaded their lands. The British rule also impacted the tribal chiefs. These chiefs who had enjoyed economic and administrative powers previously now were required to follow rules enforced by the British, they had to pay tributes to British officers and stop practicing all of their traditional functions.
