Sonu visited Monu during his brief vacation. In the mornings they both would go for yoga. In the evenings they would play tennis. To have more fun, they indulge only in one activity per day, i.e. either they went for yoga or played tennis each day. There were days when they were lazy and stayed home all day long. There were 24 mornings when they did nothing, 14 evenings when they stayed at home, and a total of 22 days when they did yoga or played tennis. For how many days Sonu stayed with Monu?

ANSWER:

  • Number of days Sonu stayed with Monu is 30 days.

GIVEN:

  • Only one activity per day.

  • Morning they would go for yoga.

  • Evening they would play tennis.

  • 24 days mornings and 14 evenings they did nothing.

  • 22 days they played either tennis or did yoga.

TO FIND:

  • The number of days Sonu stayed with Monu.

EXPLANATION:

We proceed the sum as per sets chapter.

Let x be the number of days Sonu stayed with Monu.

24 days mornings and 14 evenings they did nothing.

x - 24 days they did yoga and x - 14 days they played tennis.

n(Y ∪ T) = number of days they played either tennis or did yoga

n(Y) = number of days they did yoga

n(T) = number of days they played tennis

n(Y ∩ T) = number of days they played both tennis and did yoga

n(Y ∪ T) = n(Y) +n(T) - n(Y ∩ T)

n(Y) = x - 24

n(T) = x - 14

n(Y ∪ T) = 22

n(Y ∩ T) = 0

22 = x - 14 + x - 24 - 0

22 = 2x - 38

60 = 2x

x = 30

HENCE SONU STAYED 30 DAYS WITH MONU.
