The three properties on the basis of which materials can be classified are-
- Hardness or softness-
- The materials that are not easily bent or pressed are called hard substances while those materials that can be easily bent or pressed are called soft substances.
- Steel is hard while rubber is soft material.
2. Transparency-
- The materials through which light can be passed are called transparent e.g. water.
- Those materials through which some light can be passed are called translucent e.g. oily paper.
- The materials through which no light can be passed are called opaque e.g. wood.
3. Solubility-
- The substances that are soluble in water are called soluble substances e.g. sugar while insoluble substances are the ones that are not soluble in water e.g. sand.
