This form of energy when it reaches our ear drum, we perceive it as sound. So sound cannot travel in vacuum because in vacuum there are literally no particles to collide with each other and transfer energy. This is also the reason why you cannot hear in space. If sound could travel in space then everyday you would hear loud bangs every second created by the sun during Nuclear fission and fusion. You would also hear the Solar radiation as well as the planets and asteroids move.
