Overuse of resources creates many socio economic problems .Many thinkers have been
advocating the judicious use and conservation of resources. Gandhiji said "There is enough
for everybody's need and not for anybody's greed " .He believed in the production by
masses and not in the mass production of factories .At the international level, The club of
Rome advocated resource conservation in a more systematic way in 1968 . In 1974
Gandhian philosophy was once again presented by Schumacher in his book "Small is
Beautiful "A very influential presentation was made by the Brundtland commission report
in 1987.This report introduced the concept of Sustainable development.
