EditSouth Asia or Southern Asia is the southern region of the Asia, which is defined in both geographical and ethno-cultural terms. The region consists of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.[5][note 2] Topographically, it is dominated by the Indian Plate and defined largely by the Indian Ocean on the south, and the Himalayas and Karakoram mountains on the north. The Amu Darya, which rises in the Pamir Mountains north of the Hindu Kush, forms part of the northwestern border. On land (clockwise), South Asia is bounded by Western Asia, Central Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia

South Asian region is a home to variety of geographical features

Explanation:

  • There are different geological characteristics in the world, including glaciers, rain-forests, desert, grasslands, & mountains, which are typical for much larger continents. The Indian Ocean, Bay of Bengal, & the Arab Sea, the three major water bodies surrounds South Aisaand has highly varying climatic areas.
  • The tectonic movement is the result of all of the remarkable physical geological characteristics of South Asia. In the original Indian Platte the bulk of the South Asian mass is formed from the land. The large scale of the Himalayas has affected people in the region deeply in their views and practices. Some of the mountains are regarded sacred to a few religions which exist here.
  • Southern Asia is crossed by three main rivers, all from the Himalayas. The Indus River that for 1000s of years has been a hub of human civilisation starts in Tibet and runs via Pakistan. The River Ganges flows via northern India and creates a core area of the nation. The River Brahmaputra passes through Tibet and then joins India from the east  in order to meet the Ganges in Bangladesh to flow into  Bay of Bengal.
  • Farther south along the west & east coastline of India are smaller mountain ranges referred to as the Ghats. The western Ghats as height of about 8000 meters, but on average about 3000 feet. There is a wide variety of species in these ghats. The Eastern Ghats are not as elevated as the Western Ghats, however are similarly physical. The Ghats also provide habitat for a wide variety of animals and house vast plantations for coffee and tea.
  • The "Deccan Plateau" sits between the "Ghats of the west and east". In the middle of India, northern of the two ghat ranges, rise the Central Indian & Chota-Nagpur plateaus. The monsoon rain assures good rainfall in the Chota-Nagpur plateau, that has a tiger sanctuary & shelter for Asian elephants,
  • The northern part of this area has some of the highest elevations globally, while the southern Maldives have some of the lowest elevations, a few hardly  above the sea level. There are also low elevations in the coastal areas of southern Bangladesh. When the winds called the "Monsoon" shift from season to the year, it is strong and has a devastating effect on the region's infrastructure. In the other side there is no monsoon rain in the vast Thar Desert in West India and in areas of Pakistan. Indeed, most of southwestern Pakistan — the Baluchistan region — is dry and desert-conditions
  • The mountains along the Pakistan-Afghan border extend through Kashmir and then reach the Himalayan highlands. The Himalayas establish a natural barrier between India & China,  between the Kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan  serving as as buffer States to Kingdom of Tibet .
