Why is it asked to rub alum on cuts?

Ans : Alum or Phitkari, is a transparent salt like substance that that can be used for medicinal purposes. Alum helps in quick healing of the wound, decreases swelling and brings back the normal texture of the skin. This is due to its Kashaya (astringent) and Ropan (healing) properties. Alum also works on the wound by controlling bleeding because of its Raktastambhak (hemostatic) properties. It promotes healing by reducing pain and inflammation.

  • We can use Alum block on cuts after shaving including several other minor cuts. For deep cuts, you need to use a medicine drop that is known as mercurochrome (Merbromin Solution). Deep cuts and slight glass cuts can be cured by antiseptic ointment like Calendula, Soframycin, etc.

  • In Ayurveda, Alum (Phitkari) is used in the form of Bhasma (Pure Ash) called as Sphatika Bhasma.
