The English Language Learning Ladder of Success

12 JANUARY 2015

18 students in Key Stage 3 and 4 took Cambridge’s Preliminary English Test (PET) last December and the results were recently published, with 95% of our students passing, which is well above the global average of 72%. James Carson, Head of English as an Additional Language (EAL), tells us more about the suite of Cambridge English Language Assessment exams that we offer.

The great advantage of students taking the Cambridge English Language Assessment’s lower suite of exams, the Key English Test (KET), PET and the First Certificate in English (FCE), is that it gives them a chance to gain a valuable, externally validated English Language qualification.

It gives students a Cambridge University certificate which proves and details their level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) which is used globally to describe someone’s language competence. The CEFR, shown above, starts at levels A1 and A2. KET is A2 level and shows students are at a basic level of English and PET is B1 which means students are becoming more independent in their use of English.

Another advantage to taking these exams is that students can see a clear progression for their learning. The next step is to take the FCE and move up to B2 and, as their competence in English grows, the Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) at level C1 and Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) at level C2 can be taken, which means that students can use English at an advanced level as would be expected at university. We also offer our students these two exams and any of our Key Stage 4 or Key Stage 5 students who have an advanced level of English will be able to take them. They are recognised by thousands of educational establishments around the world including schools and universities.
