The species is least likely to exist is BeF6⁴

  • Be belongs to the first member of the Beryllium family , and it's group and period no. is 2 . As , we know that first atom of the group is small in size and don't have low lying vacant d orbital because of this they can't expand their covalency .

  • Covalency is the number of electronpairs an atom can share with other atoms. The total number of orbitals available in the valence shell is known as covalency.

  • The electronic configuration of Be is 1s² 2s² .In Be total electron present is 4. So , in Be it's maximum covalency is upto 4 and it can't expand it's octet.

  • As , it doesn't contain vacant low lying d- orbitals so it can't expand it's co-ordination number beyond 4 .

  • Due to this species like BeF6⁴- doesn't exist. As in this the maximum covalency of Be is 6 which can't be possible.
