specific gravity(G) is ratio of density of soil solid (¥s) to density of standard material(¥w) . normally standard material is Air for gases and Water for material.

1)specific gravity depend upon properties, mineral composition of material.

2)specific gravity is specific gravity of individuals particles in soil. Soil is complex material so textbook given specific gravity is average specific gravity.

3) specific gravity of soil is in Range of 2.65 to 2.9

4)Many Book showing that Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate is less than Fine Aggregate.

5) because in clay - clay mineral such as Montmorrilonite(G=2.7–2.8), Illite(2.65), Kaollinite(2.64),

and in Sand (Coarse Soil) Normally Quartz (2.65), Feldspar (2.5) are mineral include so. On this we Conclude that Clay(fine soil) has higher specific Gravity.
