A spectrum is formed when white light is made to incident on a refracting surface from rare medium to denser medium.

White light is combination of different light i.e, VIBGYOR, which are of different wavelengths and different wavelengths show different refractive index or you can say deviates at different angles.

Thus, when deviated at different angles, all the different lights from red to violet are seperated and we get a spectrum of VIBGYOR on screen.
