Waste is both a consequence and a symptom of
lives lived unwisely.
We have been living beyond the sustainable
capacity of the planet for a very long time and
our challenge is to find ways of living our lives in
ways that do not contribute to global warming,
climate change, deforestation, resource
depletion, or the destruction of habitat and
biodiversity. In short, we must learn to meet our
needs without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their's.
It is likely that resource shortages and the
absurdities and excesses of our lives will impose
change on us whether we like it or not. To date
our thinking has been almost entirely directed at
accommodating our excesses. The problem is
that whenever we experience resource
shortages, whether they be energy, water, labour
or materials we look for ways to replace them.
We rarely consider curtailing our use of them.
The idea that perhaps we might live on a finite
planet with finite resources or any kind of limits
appears to have escaped us.
