Good afternoon honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen,
How delightful and honored it is for me to stand here and deliver my speech today. This is my third time on this stage and I hope you haven’t got bored with me.

I ‘d like to start my speech with a question, has anyone here ever lived in a house without windows? I believe none, unless you could live without light and fresh air. The same goes for a home, it cannot be without books.
Shakespeare has once said, books are the nutrition of the whole world, life without books, as if there is no sunlight; wisdom without books, just like a bird without wings. Golgi left the words that the book is the ladder of human progress. There are too many words of wisdom to list here in the limited time, but they all convey the significance of books. As for me, those are old and true principles that I will always keep in mind. With books’ accompany for so many years, I also have my own sight of it. Book, B O O K, four letters stand for respective meanings. B, bridge, that connects us to K, knowledge. Between them are two Os, Objects and opinions. Books contain all kinds of object in the world. Writers put them into words and we learn from them through reading. However, if one only reads but do not think, he will constraint himself to a circle and cannot get out. What we need is to read and think critically, we should respect the author’s views and have our own opinions. So, book is to me, a bridge, built with objects and opinions to knowledge. Knowledge is power, in order to be powerful, we need to go through the bridge.
Nowadays, however, books are faced with a huge impact of modern values. Go into any average provincial town and the last thing you will find is a decent book-shop.more than one great industrial town of a population over a hundred thousand has only one such shop, and that is generally kept going by the sale of school-books. It is not because we are living in the fast-paced world so we don’t have time to read, nor because we cannot afford to buy books. We spend millions of yuan a year on the beer, but we certainly do not spend millions of fen on literature. Many people who can afford to buy a 5000 yuan cellphone would be aghast at the idea of spending a single yuan occasionally on a book. Yet, merely as furniture, books are a cheaper and better decoration than blue china or eighteenth-century chairs as they put the stamp of individuality upon a house. The desire for those luxurious things may represent not a genuine personal taste for beautiful things, but an artificial passion for rare and expensive ones. On the other hand, a collection of books will give a house character and meaning. It will tell you about its owner. A house without books is a mindless and characterless house, no matter how rich the Persian rugs and how elegant the settees and ornaments. The Persian rugs only tell you that the owner has got money, but the books will tell you whether he has got a mind as well.
Life is limited, and we cannot experience all the wonders and whys ourselves, yet through books we can infinitely enlarge the experience of being alive. A good book to me is among the best of friends, it is the same today as it always was, and it will never change.

Thank you.
