The 12th President of India, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, was born on October 15, 1931 at Dhanushkothi in the temple town Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu. Respected Principal, Teachers and Dear Students!
Today is 5th September and like every year we have assembled here to celebrate the Teachers Day. I am extremely honored to have been given the opportunity to host this program. On the day of teacher’s day, I would like to talk about one of the greatest personalities who I admire a lot, Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam. I am sure everyone admires the great missile man for his notable contributions to our nation.
Dr. APJ Kalam has been a great motivation for me and his entire life journey has played a very significant role in transforming my life in a positive way.
We all know that Dr. Kalam was an Indian scientist and a benevolent politician who served India as the President from the year 2002 to 2007. His full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. Born on October 15, 1931, into a Muslim family, Dr. Kalam was a sharp student and an obedient child who helped his family in earning the livelihood. He was born in Dhanushkodi located on the southeastern coast of India. As a child, Dr. Kalam developed a great fascination with air travel by watching birds. This hobby of Kalam later developed into a mission to join aeronautics; the mission got stronger after he saw an article in the newspaper about a British fighter plane.
His father’s profession was to build and rent boats. Kalam was a very bright and hardworking student. He distributed newspapers in his locality to support his father. But he always had great interest towards studies; he was a very promising student and showed enormous likings towards science and mathematics. Dr. Kalam went to St. Joseph’s College after passing from school and attended Madras Institute of Technology to earn his degree in aeronautical engineering.
He was always a promising student and grasped as much knowledge as possible in his school and college. Dr. Kalam joined the defense department of India after completing his graduation. He was one of the prominent figures in developing India’s nuclear capabilities. He earned several accolades and respect for his contributions. Considered as the national hero for various successful tests in 1998, Kalam was given the title of ‘Missile Man’.
Dr. Kalam was also a key figure in the Pokhran-II tests launched in May 1998. A total of 5 nuclear devices were exploded in the deserts of Rajasthan in the Pokhran-II test.
Though Politics never enticed Dr. Kalam, in the year 2002, the then ruling party of India National Democratic Alliance requested him to nominate himself for the President’s post. With the support of NDA, Dr. Kalam won the election and became the 11th President of India. As a President too, Dr. Kalam lived a very simple life and motivated young students to live a successful life and serve the nation. Regarded as the President of the people, Dr. Kalam conducted over 500,000 one-to-one meetings with young students and people across the nation during his five-year Presidential term. This immense popularity of Dr. Kalam earned him the award of ‘Youth Icon’ for the year 2003 and 2006 hosted by MTV.
Dr. Kalam served India as the president for 1 term and died due to cardiac arrest on July 27, 2015. He was a visiting professor and motivational guru at several universities.
Dr. Kalam has been a legend and every person respects this great personality for his achievements, contributions and his simplicity. I appeal to every student to follow the path of Dr. Kalam and live an honorable life throughout.
Thank You!
