Friends, I take this opportunity to thank the organisers for giving me the chance to speak on a subject that involves us all, both the teachers and the taught.
Today, education in India is at the crossroads. It is for our policymakers to decide which road to take, the one going downhill or the one leading to the peak. While the country has progressed significantly and with it our areas of higher study, certain changes need to take place without any further delay. The number one change should be adoption of means to prevent malpractices by students during examinations at all levels, most of all at the high-school level, as this has become a cancer in many regions of the country. The second important change that is required to improve the system would be to make it illegal for students in colleges and universities to take part in politics; unless this is taken care of, goondaism of the worst kind will tear apart the fabric of our centres of learning. The third change would be to inculcate a sound value system in the citizens of tomorrow.
Over the years, there have been some positive developments in the area of education in our country. With the opening up of the education sector, private enterprise has funded and set up many Engineering and Management institutions. Now, we should carefully monitor their operation and progress, especially in relation to the quality of teaching and placement, in jobs, of the students passing out. New Medical Colleges, however, have not been coming up in the country; this problem needs to be addressed in consultation with the Medical Council of India, as India is woefully short of qualified doctors.Experts from different walks of life should be consulted in an ongoing manner to make our education system more knowledge-based and in training our students to become more job-worthy in this ever-changing world.
In the rural areas of the country, many more teachers need to be appointed, who are adequately qualified and whose singular aim would be to pass on their valuable knowledge to their students.
Lastly, all types of political interference in educational institutions must be stopped and charging of capitation fee must be made illegal.
Thank you for giving me a patient hearing.
