Manufacturers prefer mixed package as it is cost-efficient and lightweight. It combines best properties of various materials, for example, paper cups are waterproof if they are covered with a tiny plastic lining.

Disposal of plastic and mixed containers is usually very simple – people just throw the package away and it is further delivered to the landfills. They do not degrade here (or rather degrade very slowly) because the specifics of the material do not allow it. Degradable plastic cannot be used in the food industry yet as the package shall provide a sufficient barrier between food and environment. Due to the abundance of trash and lack of bacteria, plastic degrades even slower, consequently, the landfills cannot process the garbage for decades. The human pressure on the environment increases with every year and it is difficult to make the situation any better.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to refuse from the package in the food industry. It is possible to eliminate the damage by sticking to the 3R’s rule. Manufacturers need to make sure that they can reduce, reuse, and recycle all the packing which is supplied with products. On the other hand, it is necessary to improve the consumer’s culture – separating garbage and putting it into special containers is the only way to avoid stocking trash in the landfills.

Food packaging is evolving as a threat to the environment day by day. Unfortunately, most food packaging is  single use and not recycled.

The plastic water bottle that was in your hands for just five minutes will float on the surface of the sea forever. Food packaging is a real threat for the planet.

We tend to use different materials to cover our food and prevent it from being contaminated during transport. Most  materials used in food packaging are neither degradable nor recyclable. Paper, glass, aluminium, steel and plastic can all be recycled if  used separately. However, most manufacturers use mixed packs because they are inexpensive and lightweight.

Once the food containers are used, they are not properly discarded as trash which results in pollution of land and water. Plastic containers buried in a landfill degrade slowly or don't degrade at all. Chemicals from the packaging materials leach into the contaminated soil. Cups and lids, coffee pods, foam containers, plastic bottles and  their lids, plastic wrappers, plastic grocery bags, etc. are made for one-time use. If  not recycled, they often clog our waterways and are mistaken as food or tangled up by animals.

Plastic floating in  the oceans could cause a real threat to animals. We have seen whales with plastic bags in their stomatchs and various samples of dead birds found with stomatchs clogged with plastic.

Nutrient packs that are not recycled or composted end up in landfill. This releases harmful greenhouse gasses such as methane, ammonia, H-sulfide etc all of which are dangerous and harmful to the environment.

According to the United States  Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food  packaging materials contribute for almost half of all solid waste that accumulates in landfills.

So it's important to identify the most effective alternatives on the market  to reduce the environmental impact of food packaging.

I would like to conclude my speech by advising you all to eliminate the use of single use food packaging and carry reusable search luggage, use low chrome steel cups and water bottles, and avoid plastic bags as much as possible. We must always consider using cloth, jute, paper containers which are degradable or easily recyclable.
