Teach them a few specific things that they will really appreciate. From my experience with teaching two elderly ladies (my mother, 60+, and my mother in law, 70+) the first things should be how to use viber/whats app and how to take and send photos through these apps. Then communicate through these and send them photos on a regular basis. This has made them appreciate the smartphone a lot. Both of them have soon grasped (on their own) the concept of smileys and how to use them. If you can think of anything else that THEY will consider very useful with a smartphone, try to help them with that. My mother, for instance, loves bubble wrap amd popping it. So she is now a candy crush addict (almost). She beats me by far in that game.

If you start with explaining what app store is, how to change settings etc they will just get bored. Keep it simple. And let them explore on their own. Whenever I meet my mother or mother-in-law they always have various questions on how to do something on their “new shiny smartphone
