Madam Chairperson,
At the outset, I thank you for giving me an opportunity to address this august house. Further, I wish to also express my gratitude for permitting to speak on a subject that is very close to my heart.
Madam, if we look around the world today, those nations that have honest citizens forming a sizeable majority are the ones that have progressed the most. Most of those nations are smaller than India in size and have only a fraction of our employable manpower.
Integrity is a basic human quality that will not only result in progress from within, but also draw people from other countries to lend their expertise and resources in taking India forward. Once we are known to be honest and our institutions are seen to function transparently, ease of doing business with India will become apparent to people across nations. So far, dishonest people have compromised the country's progress for their personal gain.
We must endeavour not only to be men and women of integrity, but also seen to be so through our deeds and actions. Justice and fair play should be the overriding principles in our day to day functioning, or else people will suspect us to be biased or unfair.
In our workplace, we should be loyal to the task in hand and ensure that we work towards our goal diligently and remain focused all the time. Resorting to short-cuts is not expected of men with integrity.
Citizen's of India who run businesses of different kinds ought to clean up their act too. They must refrain from avoiding payment of taxes and begin declaring their true income. It is a matter of shame that less than 10% of India's population actually pays income tax, whereas a large percentage hide their true income. If everyone comes on board, corruption would be a thing of the past and there'd be no stopping India from progressing at a rate even faster than it is doing today.
