The proverb, ‘make hay while the sun shines’is generally used to mean that ‘it is very necessary to make the best of whatever opportunity comes in our way.’ We should always be alert, in mind and body, to reap the benefits of an opportunity.
It is very difficult to prepare hay during rainy and foggy days. Therefore, a wise farmer prepares hay crops during fine weather conditions. He understands that the climatic conditions favorable for making not continue forever. For this reason, he tries to avail himself of the opportunity for making hay crops during sunny days.
The proverb warn people that if they procrastinates and do not avail of the good opportunities, then they may find themselves in a situation when the opportunity has lapsed.

However, in terms of meaning in life, it refers to the opportunities that one must seize before it is gone. When one makes the use of opportunities at the correct time it lasts for a long time and proves to be an advantage. This proverb not only applies to a certain age group but to everyone.
For instance, school children often delay to study during normal school days, however when the exams approach the student study in rush and get tensed about the same. Whereas, students who study during normal days and makes hays they often stay relaxed and calm during exam time and majority succeed with flying colors.
Proverbs like 'seize the day' and 'carpe diem' are in same meaning with the proverb 'make hay while the sun shines.'
One must make use of opportunities, as life is too short to miss any kind of opportunity.
