Speech on Reimagine, Recreate, restore

Answer:
World Environment Day, and it serves as a platform to raise awareness on the problems facing our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea-level increase, and food security, among others. Sadly, we are way past the stage where only spreading awareness could work, it is high time we act. Because Jacques-Yves Cousteau rightly said, ‘For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realise that, in order to survive, he must protect it.’
If we look around closely, we’ll realise that we are inseparably surrounded by material objects – whether they are needed in our life or not. For every bit of this material we use, there is a growing network of global actions that is slowly stripping our health, draining Earth's resources and degrading our planet's habitats. On average, global populations of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles plunged by 68% between 1970 and 2016, according to the WWF and Zoological Society of London.
If left unchecked, is there a risk that human consumption may finally turn the Earth into an uninhabitable world? Do we have it in us to stop before it is too late? Yes! See what Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned environmentalist, has to say this #WorldEnvironmentDay and let's make it our responsibility to take care of Mother Earth by making sustainable choices in our everyday life.
Ecosystems are the fabric of life on which we all depend. They are declining rapidly because of human actions. But there is still time to save them. This is why the theme for World Environment Day 2021 is “Ecosystem Restoration”. It can be done in many forms, like growing trees, greening cities, rewilding gardens, changing diets, and cleaning up rivers and coasts. We can do our bit, choose our own way to be the #GenerationRestoration and make peace with nature. No step is small when it comes to restoring an ecosystem - we can actively plant trees or consciously reduce our carbon footprint.
One simple way is to switch our daily consumption needs to a more sustainable choice, like replacing plastic with paper. The planet’s seas and oceans swallow up to 12 million tonnes of refuse a year, including 800 kg of plastic a day, which may take hundreds of years to disappear and translates into between 5 and 50 billion plastic fragments, according to data by Greenpeace. These dreadful statistics give rise to the need to bring back paper as an alternative to plastic for commercial and personal use. It is a wise solution because paper is a more ecological, biodegradable and sustainable material.
