Any material which is valuable and useful for humans is called a resource. Natural resources like land, water and soil are the free gifts of nature and satisfy human wants.

Resources form the backbone of the economy of a nation. In the absence of land, water, forest, air, mineral, it is not possible to develop agriculture and industry. By utilizing the natural resources humans have created houses, buildings, means of transport and communication, industries etc. These man made resources are also essential for development.

Resources can be classified on the basis of origin, renewability and utility. Biotic resources include all living elements of the environment. Forests and forest products, crops, birds, wildlife, fishes and other marine lives. These resources reproduce and regenerate themselves and hence are renewable. Coal and mineral oil are also biotic resources but they are non renewable.

Abiotic resources include all non living elements of the environment. Land, water, air and minerals like iron, copper, gold, silver etc. They are exhaustible and non renewable as they cannot be regenerated or reproduced.
