A river can readily be likened to life, which is what makes a river the mirror of life. As Tennyson is his poem ‘The Brook’ writes, a stream or a river flows continuously, irrespective of any hurdles on its way. Similarly, life has to go on despite any mishaps or ill occurrences. Just like the river has to chart its course over varied terrain, ranging from hills and mountains to the pleasant plains, from smooth surfaces to stony paths, life too has its ups and downs. There are times when life is great, abounding with joy and other times when it is trying, filled with challenges.

Further, the brook or river is full of power, just like humans. They can use the power for the good or to unleash a fury of destruction. Rivers can sustain fields, plants and animals, yet are also known to destroy the same plantations and animal habitats. Similarly, humans can nourish nature, other humans and animals, but possess the power to hurt and harm the same entities that they once nurtured.

Another perspective suggests a more positive picture. A river is very determined. It does not give up merely because it does not have a path. Instead, it takes up the challenge and cuts through the banks, making way for itself. The same thinking applies to life. When faced with hardships, humans ought to look for alternatives and fight the circumstances. They should not give up.

Taking a cue from the river, humans should not give up. Regardless of how difficult the circumstances are, the river never stops flowing. It inevitably reaches its final destination, the ocean.  Humans too should not stop living and should strive to attain their final goal- of being one with God.
