The ocean is a very serene environment and it is extremely relaxing. It is not only the sand and the sun that make it relaxing; it goes beyond the surf into the deep blue sea. However, no sea exploration would be possible without self- contained underwater breathing apparatus', or scuba diving.
Scuba diving, nowadays, consists of no heavy metal suit, but instead gas cylinders and an air hose, which provides the divers with great mobility underwater. This type of underwater exploration, however, was not heard of until around the 18th century, where early diving history takes place. In 1771, a British man named John Smeaton invented the first air pump, which was connected to a diving barrel filled with air, which today would be a gas tank. Only one year later, a French man named Sieur Freminet invented a "rebreathing" device. This device recycled exhaled air that went into the barrel. Although this device paved the way for inventors to improve, Freminet died from a lack of oxygen using this device only twenty minutes after using it. Another English inventor, William James, invented a metal helmet that is seen often in museums. It consisted of a belt with a long tube that brought air to the helmet. This device could only be used for a seven minute dive. The word Scuba, however, wasn't used until 1939, when an American doctor, Christian Lambertson made an apparatus for the military. It was used during the war and it was codenamed SCUBA. His apparatus also failed when divers went too deep and they died from the wrong gas mixture. Finally, in 1943, Emile Gagnan and Jacques Cousteau invented a regulator which automatically changed the air pressure in the suit. This made way for the modern diving suit when the regulator was connected to two metal cylinders, much like the equipment that we see today.
