TEXT PREVIEW
Some of the most important things before talking about the ethical issues in social networks are: explaining what a social network is, talking about its functions, and also the exponential growth it has had in the last years. I will give my personal opinion about the advantages and disadvantages that social networks can bring, and how this could affect an individual’s sharing information. Finally, I will give my opinion about the issues and whether it is the responsibility of social network companies or the individuals, mostly based on privacy terms of these networks.
A social network is a place where you can interact and communicate with people, by sharing information, photos, feelings, etc. There are different types of social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, among others. The boom of social networks has steadily risen since 2006, a year in which there where 12,000,000 Facebook users, and 1,000 twitter users. Currently, each of these networks has 1 billion and 500 million followers, respectively. D. Steven White carried out an investigation in the last two years, which shows a table calculating the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) from 2006-2012. Evidence of this is indicated in the appendices. Mr. White’s insight provides a refreshing look at the immense gap between how many people are using these social networks nowadays, in comparison with 7 years ago.
Having the table as an aid, we can see that in 2009 many of these social networks had an exceptional growth, which is still rising growing rather exponentially. Through word of mouth, individuals spread the advantages of the social networks, which created a snowball effect of constant new users. There are many ways in which you can easily connect with your acquaintances or other people; one of the most common used tools is the “search bar” in social networks. The “search bar” is used simply by typing a name into the bar, which results in the apprehension of another person’s profile and information. This results could even lead up to having him (her) as a new friend. This example refers to sending a friend request on Facebook. In my personal opinion, this network is the most successful one, I believe it offers much more things compared to the other social networks; Some of these things include posting statuses (main attraction in Twitter), posting photos (Instagram’s main attraction), chatting, keeping in touch with your friends, sharing files, among others. Although these social networks offer lots of different advantages and benefits, they also have many disadvantages that can lead to many different issues. Some of these disadvantages include an excessive amount of information online, which leads to no privacy at all. Another disadvantage is that social networks could be a big distraction, and even more to young people; there’s always people checking their mobile looking at what other people are posting on their profiles, doing during their week, looking at their photos, etc. Firstly the main issue that is undoubtedly considered a big problem, derives from the privacy problems. People are constantly posting and sharing information, pictures, videos, etc. without really knowing who can see those things. Reflecting upon this previous matter that was discussed in class, if we acknowledge that having 200 friends on a social network which in turn could easily have another 200 friends each in a social network (and we set our privacy settings on ‘friends of friends’), this could be utterly dangerous and mean sharing information with thousands of strangers. This situation presented a problem in my country (Mexico) approximately 3-4 years ago when a lot of people were kidnapped, murdered, etc.; in many of these cases, information was revealed saying that the victims were reached due to their profiles on social networks. One person can easily create a fake profile, add another person as a friend, and many people will go through with this...
